****P’s Pick for March: DaDa on Swinton (one block north of Atlantic Ave)****
DaDa is well, just plain cool. An eclectic menu that has something for everyone makes it a great place to eat, with reasonable prices. From the slightly tattered white picket fence to the mismatched sofas and chairs in the courtyard, the place just has a certain appeal – a funky vibe all its own. I LOVE the grilled brie and the freshly muddled fruit mojitos (like blackberry or blueberry). They do a good job on the espresso and chocolate martinis too. (Ok, can you tell I like martinis?!) On weekends you find refreshingly different live music — jazzy, alternativey, hippy-ish, reggae-ish or blues-ish bands that start playing around 10 PM. Weeknights you might find a magician, a poetry reading, and other less common forms of entertainment. Thank you, DaDa — for your uncommonness! Kudos to you!
****P’s Pick for February: Cabana El Rey, at the top of the Ave!**** “Mojitos, anyone?!”
Ok so when I first moved here, I didn’t know what a Mojito was. Sounded like the latest Taco Bell concoction. Then I had one at Cabana El Rey … and fell in love! They do a great job on their mojitos and often feature fresh fruit like blackberry or strawberry muddled with the mint. Yum! Their bar (whether you sit inside or out on the sidewalk) is one of the best people-watching spots on The Avenue and I always feel very relaxed when I’m plopped down in a barstool there. I could just sit and watch the world go by for a couple hours. The food is very good – I think the Empanadas are some of the best I’ve ever had. Small but delicious. If you like mushrooms, and you like Cuban bread – try the Tapas de Hongas! Excellent appetizer. Cabana also has this way-cool private room that you can reserve if you have 10 to 16 people dining. Cozy, dark, kind of medieval feel to it. If you go at lunchtime, the Cuban salad and the Cuban sandwich are both really good. Cabana El Rey is just one block east of Swinton as you head down the Avenue into all the shopping and nightlife. Check it out sometime and enjoy! Salute’!
